Kidney Transplant & Donor Nephrectomy

Kidney transplant and donor nephrectomy training

Advanced Training Program in Kidney Transplant & Donor Nephrectomy

Clinical and surgical training in renal transplantation

This one-month advanced training program is designed for surgeons and urologists who want structured exposure to the clinical pathway of kidney transplantation and the surgical principles of donor nephrectomy.

The program follows the transplant journey from donor and recipient assessment through operative planning, theatre workflow, vascular and ureteric reconstruction, postoperative monitoring and long-term follow-up. The level of participation is guided by prior experience, patient safety and institutional protocols.

Participants gain a clearer understanding of how transplant teams coordinate surgery, nephrology, anaesthesia, radiology, pathology, immunosuppression and postoperative care to understand the principles involved in achieving safe transplant outcomes and appropriate graft function.

The Transplant Training Model

ASSESS -> PLAN -> PREPARE -> OPERATE -> MONITOR -> FOLLOW UP

Case-based teaching is combined with operative observation, demonstrations and supervised clinical exposure. Faculty explain the reason for each decision so that participants develop both technical awareness and sound transplant judgment.

Core Training Areas

Donor Evaluation and Nephrectomy

Training covers donor selection, renal function assessment, vascular anatomy, imaging review, counselling, consent and perioperative preparation. Participants review open and minimally invasive donor nephrectomy principles, kidney retrieval, preservation and protection of the donor.

Recipient Preparation

The recipient pathway includes indication for transplantation, immunological assessment, access to the iliac vessels, infection evaluation, anaesthetic planning and preparation for induction immunosuppression. The importance of multidisciplinary coordination is emphasized.

Transplant Operative Principles

Participants are introduced to graft preparation, vascular anastomosis, renal reperfusion, ureteric implantation, bladder considerations and drain or stent use where appropriate. Operative anatomy, delicate tissue handling and prevention of vascular or ureteric complications are discussed.

Postoperative and Long-Term Care

The program reviews graft function, urine output, fluid balance, immunosuppression, infection prevention, rejection surveillance, vascular complications, urinary complications and early recognition of delayed graft function. Long-term recipient follow-up and donor wellbeing are also considered.
